10 Most Influential Strategy Games of All Time

Image: Official Site

The 1990s was a golden decade for strategy gamers. With gaming slowly maturing and with computers unable to reproduce the jaw-dropping graphics that we see in today’s high-budget titles, developers were forced to rely on creativity and innovation to win over the fans and achieve commercial success. Many of the strategy genre’s core features, from online competitive play to economic resource management, were established by games that began their lives during this fledgling period, games that are now considered by many to be hugely influential classics – even legends in their own time.

10. Homeworld

Image: Archer007, Official Site

Boasting a revolutionary universe, a captivating storyline and a movie-like graphics engine, it’s no surprise that Homeworld captured fans’ imaginations to the extent that it did. It was the very first 3D space real-time strategy game (RTS), full of huge, balletic cosmic battles, and featuring an immersive soundtrack and a ground-breaking 3D interface. Homeworld even now remains compatible with modern operating systems such as Windows XP, Vista and even Windows 7.

Homeworld developer Relic would go on to make further acclaimed RTS games such as Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War and the World War II themed Company of Heroes.

9. Total Annihilation

Total Annihilation was a game that was highly praised by critics, reviewers and players alike, and is even still played today. It featured 3D units and maps, resource management, base building and had two campaigns to choose from – and despite being released in 1997, placed first in GameSpy’s 2004 Top Ten RTS Games of All-Time chart.

Total Annihilation lead designer Chris Taylor would go on to develop another RTS which would also be highly praised – Supreme Commander, deemed to be TA’s spiritual successor.

8. Age of Empires

With an epic timeline and an innovative approach to strategic gameplay, it’s easy to see why Age of Empires became such a huge commercial hit and influenced so many following titles. While the initial game laid the creative and unique foundations for the rest of the series to build upon, the franchise perhaps peaked with the varying improvements and new game functions brought about by 1999’s Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.

7. Populous

Video: YouTube

Developed by the pioneering Bullfrog Productions in 1989, Populous was the first true “god game” to hit gamers’ screens. Although now defunct, many of Bullfrog Productions’ innovative game designs echo through today’s charts, and the much-loved Populous was no exception. In it, the player wields godlike powers in order to coerce and guide their people to success against a similarly empowered rival god. Populous was extremely successful, both commercially and critically, winning several awards and spawning sequels – such as Populous: The Beginning, seen above.

6. StarCraft

StarCraft, released in 1998, became an international sensation and led the way for what would later become known as ‘E-Sports’ in countries like South Korea. It is one of the all-time best-selling PC titles across all genres and is often talked about as being one of the few truly genre-defining RTS games. In July 2010, a long-awaited sequel was released to almost universally high critical praise.

5. Command & Conquer

Image: Starfeeder, Official Site

Command & Conquer dominated the RTS scene during the mid-1990s. Along with the much-loved follow-up title, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, the original game helped to popularize the real-time strategy niche among the growing gaming community and cemented some of the genre’s staple elements. The franchise remains alive and well today with superstar casts, base-building fun and big budgets. And of course, Kane is still up to no good…

4. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans

Video: YouTube, Official Site

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, released in 1994, was a significant milestone in gaming history. The high replayability factor, the inclusion of skirmish maps (then virgin territory) and ability to play against other people via modem connections made it a surefire hit.

The success of Warcraft spurred Blizzard on to publish further games which refined the series’ features, as well as setting the groundwork for the hugely influential StarCraft. Warcraft’s influential legacy transcends even its own game type: it led to the development of the hugely popular World of Warcraft MMORPG which became truly definitive in its own field as the biggest and most successful massively multiplayer online in the world.

3. Dune II

Image: Westwood Studios

Undoubtedly one of the most significant real-time strategy games ever, Dune II combined many features that would become genre standards over the next two decades. The fog of war, the gathering of economic resources and the construction of player bases would be de rigueur for following games such as the Command & Conquer series. It was even the first to allow the player to use a mouse for unit control.

2. Sid Meier’s Civilization

Image: MicroProse, Official Site

Consistently named as one of the most influential games of all time, the award-winning Civilization regularly crops up in top 25 lists. With several sequels and a few offshoots, Sid Meier’s creation is alive and well today, thanks to its considerable replayability, massive depth and competitive multiplayer aspects. It is famously addictive too (just one more turn!). Spanning twenty years, Civ’s sequels spark many debates among loyal fans as to which is the greatest version to date.

1. Shogun: Total War

Video: YouTube, Official Site

Shogun: Total War and the Total War series combined the successes of previous turn-based RTS games with real-time control of land and (later on) sea battles. Its mastery of both of these elements ensured its place in the pantheon of RTS gods.

Video: YouTube, Official Site

For the first time, thousands of soldiers appeared on the battlefield, each with authentic Sengoku period battledress and a huge variety of weapons. But the game was more than just a rock, paper, scissors battlefield. Each battle was the tip of a spear (or should that be yari?) – the culmination of the player’s myriad actions on the turn-based campaign map. Construction policies, diplomatic endeavors, espionage, trade and religion would all affect the would-be shogun’s gaming experience.

Since Shogun’s appearance in June 2000, further Total War games have refined the game’s features, adding new and innovative facets and selling in the millions. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find a strategy gamer who hasn’t played a Total War game.

With the latest in the famous series reprising its original feudal Japanese setting – and receiving high praise so far – the series looks set to remain at the top.

Best Real Time Strategy Games Ever

HI EVERYBODY…(hi dr. nick! Haha). I wanted to make a list for THE BEST PC video game genre…Real Time Strategy Games. One series in particular, Command and Conquer, really started the movement and now there are hundreds and hundreds of RTS games out there. I thought I would simplify everything and just let everyone know the best 5 series of all time so you don’t waste your time sifting through tons of reviews.

Number 5: Starcraft

Yes, Starcraft deserves to be in the top 5 people! The game has been around forever, since 1998, and still has millions of players logged into it. Maybe the most interesting plot line there is for a RTS game. There are tons of races which each offer their own unique way of playing the game while creating multiple strategies is necessary to get the W. The most infamous thing Startcraft is known for is the Zergling rush. Zerging is when the player quickly acquires units and sends them out to destroy enemy bases as quick as possible. Try it out of you haven’t played an RTS game, you will be hooked on the genre!

Number 4: Age of Empires

This series will always remain classic. The unique unit management is absolutely fantastic. AoE will always be special to me and have a place in my heart. No matter what comes out, I will always take time out of my month to come back and rock out on one of the games for a couple of hours.

Number 3: Dawn Of War

2 Words…Ridiculous Game! This game has tons of customizable squads with lots of options ranging from reinforcements, to different weapons to combat different units. What differs this game from the rest is that it has phenomenal graphics and a great computer is not required to run it. The squad combat is by far the best part of this game and I can see games in the future applying this to their battle system. You done did phenomenal Dawn of War!

Number 2: Warcraft

How could I not have this game in the top 5!? Probably the most recognized of the RTS’s, the South Park episode about this was hilarious, and is one of the best! Everything is customizable, the only problem I have with this game is doing the quests for the best treasures. You need 20-30 people working in sync to complete. It’s hard enough getting a group of 5 to communicate properly, let alone 20-30. Now I don’t care for what Warcraft has evolved into because of WOW. I just despise the idea of my favorite characters being killed or owned by random newbs who have never ever played Warcraft, and this is a lot coming from me (I have logged in over 200 hours). That being said, you cannot judge the series on one or two hiccups, this game helped evolve RTS’s into what they are today.

And Drum Roll Please….Number 1: Command and Conquer

I put so much emphasis on how this revolutionized the RTS genre, how could I not make it #1!? A dozen of these games have been put out for a reason…people keep buying them because they are the best! Everyone knows Command and Conquer is the game put RTS games on the map!

There it is…the best 5 strategy series ever. Like I said, there are hundreds more that are out, but these 5 def are the most noteworthy…Let the bashing of my list commence!!!
